Not long ago we brought you a story about Mission Motors and Mission RS and R electric motorcycles and today we have more innovation news for the motorcycle world that also involves batteries. A motorcycle helmet built by a new Russian company, LiveMap, will bring GPS Navigation to new and used bikes in Manhattan, KS; or more accurately to their riders.

View through the helmet with heads-up navigation
The system incorporates a microphone, light sensor, ear phone and a micro display into a motorcycle helmet to provide a heads-up navigation display for riders much like the heads-up display found on fighter jets. The rider will interact with the system using voice commands and the transparent display is projected onto the center of the visor. As riders of new and used bikes in Manhattan our first thought was and yours may be; what about obstructing the rider’s vision?
The development team says the system is actually safer as it provides the information in the rider’s direct field of vision rather than forcing the rider to look away from the road ahead. The light sensor has been incorporated into the system to keep the display transparent not matter what time of day, allowing an unobstructed view of the road ahead while also providing navigation information. The system also incorporates a gyroscope and digital compass that allow the display to remain properly oriented even if the rider turns their head or as the rider leans to take a corner.

Gyro and compass keep the display correctly oriented with head movement.
The current design is rated to deliver a day’s worth of use with its rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which as charged through a USB connection. LiveMap is currently sourcing the funding to create a working prototype to take into production and expects the helmet to have an initial cost of around $2,000, though American early birds can get one for $1500. That’s a steep price for a helmet but you can expect the price to come down as the supporting technology develops and competitors come to the market.
